Summary
With 197 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,431.00, 29.9% of 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltracks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
Think of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack as a German Subaru Outback, but more fun to drive. That comparison captures its basic appeal: it takes the familiar wagon formula and adds all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and a slightly raised suspension to better handle a range of daily driving needs. The result is a car that stands out for buyers who want practicality without giving up a more engaging feel behind the wheel.
Its strengths are rooted in that simple recipe. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is presented as a tried-and-true approach rather than something radically new, and that familiarity is part of the charm. It should appeal to shoppers looking for a versatile wagon with a more adventurous look and the added confidence of all-wheel drive. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests the car’s handling and comfortable interior are major positives, while tire concerns and the absence of features such as blind spot detection may be drawbacks for some buyers.

Amazing traction, beautiful interior, good German engineering. Great value. Doesnt have sensors for cars getting too close or blind spot detection

For my purposes, the Golf Alltrack is a near perfect vehicle. It is not gross and large, yet its interior room is greater than many SUVs. The handling is responsive and sure. While there was no means of testing the Alltrack capabilities, I would assume that it would meet situations of snow with great aplomb. The acceleration and driving characteristics were excellent. Fit and finish both inside and out were equally superb. Unless you absolutely NEED an offroad vehicle (and exactly how often are you really going to use that offroad potential that you were seduced into buying?) I cannot imagine a better or more practical vehicle. The car is a good value. For those who want an automatic transmission, it is available. I would place the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack far ahead of the Subaru offerings in both handling, acceleration and fit and finish.

Hard to find an all wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission. A blast to drive.

Actually fun to drive. Steering firms up nicely in custom setting. Though it leans in the twisties it doesnt feel tippy, tracks through with virtually no understeer. Avoid ludicrous speed setting in custom. No mechanical issues. With the DSG transmission(SE & SEL), beats the snot out of the Outback. Avoid oem tires, probs with SE delaminating Continentals, Falkens are just terrible in all respects. once switched to Michelin Pilot A/S performance is way enhanced. VW killed the GOLF at least for US. Im certain the make more $ on the Tiguan, which is the entry soccer mom model. May buy another to keep in CO. For us (both the SE & SEL-yup two) we have keepers ie 125-50k.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack earns a 5/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8.17/10 rating.
The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its impressive handling, comfortable interior, and fun driving experience. The all-wheel drive capability and available manual transmission also come through as recurring positives. That fits the model’s practical-but-more-engaging mission well, especially if you want a versatile wagon with SUV styling cues and added confidence in daily driving.
The market also shows 32.2% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable and fun to live with, and the feedback points to a car people feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the formula is tried and true, which reinforces the sense that this is a familiar, straightforward vehicle rather than a complicated one.
Volkswagen also includes automatic post-collision braking as standard, and the available Car-Net Security and Service package adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and Family Guardian speed and boundary alerts. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that reliability concerns can still matter more than average satisfaction suggests, so condition and maintenance history deserve close attention.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven on rough roads or used in winter conditions. Pay close attention to tire condition, suspension wear, and any signs that the car has been pushed beyond normal pavement use. It’s also worth checking that the safety and driver-assistance features you want are actually present on the specific trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model includes all-wheel drive, hill-descent control, an off-road driving mode, and a 1.2-inch increase in ground clearance, but it lacks the more upscale equipment found higher up the range. The top trim adds the most comprehensive infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: The Alltrack uses a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The broad torque curve and available DSG transmission help it feel more responsive than the numbers suggest, and the manual transmission is also part of the appeal.
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions. The top trim is also available with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable.
- Infotainment: The top infotainment system includes smartphone projection, satellite radio, data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are recommended for easier everyday use.
- Fuel efficiency: The Alltrack returned 24.8 mpg on a testing loop and averaged 26 mpg over a week of driving, while the EPA says it should get 25 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is offered in 3 trim levels: Alltrack S, Alltrack SE, Alltrack SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Alltrack S gives you the core formula, but it skips the more upscale comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Alltrack SE is the best value if you want a stronger feature set, including a panoramic sunroof, premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button start, and automatic rain-sensing wipers.
- Premium/top trim: The Alltrack SEL is the most fully equipped choice, with the best infotainment setup, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, larger wheels, and available driver-assistance and lighting upgrades.
The SEL is the trim to target if you want the most complete safety and tech package, while the SE is the smarter pick if you want a richer experience without going all the way to the top.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

- Inventory: There are 199 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,939.95, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's resale value?
The current average of $13,495 sits slightly below last year's $14,259.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can be a mixed signal for future sellers. On one hand, softer pricing can make it easier to buy now. On the other, it means you should be realistic about how quickly value may recover if you plan to resell later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack safe?
It earns top scores from the federal government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips the Alltrack with automatic post-collision braking as standard, and Car-Net’s Security and Service package adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and Family Guardian speed and boundary alerts. Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions, while the SEL uniquely adds lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
A key caveat is that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable, so you should not assume every desirable driver-assistance feature is present on a given trim.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The year stands out for its tried-and-true wagon formula, all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and strong everyday practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the Alltrack’s practical wagon shape with all-wheel drive and a more engaging driving feel, the 2017 model is a solid place to focus your search. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find value in the market, but you should be selective about condition and history before committing.
