About 2004 Lexus GX
The new GX 470 included some new safety features for the second model year. Side curtain airbag technology was updated, and a tire-pressure monitoring system was added. A rear backup camera was available as an option. Later 2004 models also offered an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The GX was powered by a potent 4.7 liter V-8, which gave the 4900 pound SUV 235 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The GX could tow 5000 pounds, which made it far more useful than the RX. Drivers reported that the GX was quite nimble for its size: able to accelerate and break quickly. The 4Runner frame provided a rugged and sturdy feel, but the finely tuned adjustable suspensive carried the GX along very smoothly. While GX was positioned a grade below the LX, its interior was still reminiscent of the LS series cabin. A functional and practical (and optional) navigation system tops the list among owners' favorite features. Drivers continued to praise the GX 470 as the true SUV that Lexus had needed. The car-based RX was not a capable 4x4, and the flagship LX 470 was more civilized than the previous LX 450. If you wanted a Lexus, and for some reason wanted to take it off road, the GX was your best bet. A common criticism is the fuel consumption. The GX gets 15 miles per gallon in traffic and 18 on the highway. It offers little improvement over the LX, which weights a quarter ton more.
