Out of 60 vehicles over the course of 45 years this was the most incredible one. No modifications, all stock, naturally aspirated 4.8 liter V8 with stunning performance and handling, a real sleeper sport sedan. I surprised a lot of people out on the open road. In my last days of ownership I put it on the track for a day of high performance driving instruction. Even the instructor was surprised at its performance and got a big kick out of instructing me to pass a C8 on 2 occasions and even a Viper ACR. It wasn’t that they couldn’t have run away from me, however they had less experience. Less of a car could not have done it and it did it at speeds in excess of 135 mph. When we pitted on one occasion, however, the BMW was billowing smoke which I knew was only an oil leak but one of the other instructors nearly called down the fire team. This is the cars design flaw that was fatal to my ownership. Oil leaks that are overwhelming and extremely expensive to repair. If you’re looking to buy one, you also better be looking for oil leaks I’m sad to say.Mar 26, 2023

Have really enjoyed this car. Never had a 5-series before, only 3-series and the BMW performance did not skip a beat. The Bremmer sport wheels give the sportscar look i was after and with the V8 engine, interstate driving became sporty. Mar 06, 2015

This is an amazing and comfortable car.Good safety and fun features. It runs smooth, has great pickup and excellent brakes. Fuel economy is surprisingly great: most of the times its around 24 miles per gallon. sound system is definitely better than most of the other cars I have. I-drive can take sometimes to learn. Front seats have many options in terms of adjustments. Labor and services from dealers are expensive.Sep 08, 2014

Loved this car and will stay with BMW till i find a car i do not like which will be never. Car is a dream in the snow and rain and in perfect conditions is an amazing machine to tear through turns with its AWD.Jan 30, 2014

BMW seriously needs to address the quality of the paint job. I often see the front and rear bumpers clear coat peeling and that definitely needs to be corrected. Other than the exterior paint job I would recommend investing in this vehicle.Jan 26, 2014

The parts are very high, and if you have to go to the dealer it's too pricey. I am lucky in that i know a master BMW mechanic that has a small operation and his prices are about half that of a dealer, so i would hunt around for a good mechanic because it will save you a lot. I haven't had anything that expensive go wrong with this car, so no complaints coming from my cornerJan 03, 2014

2008 550i awesome sport sedan in it's day. The newer 5 series looks better but does not have the same connection to the rode. Decent gas milleage and maintenance has not been a problem so far. Have owned the car 2 1/2 years.May 25, 2013

Good low range torque, slick and understated.
Very good sport sedan with a solid V-8.
Very quiet interior - definitely a head turner.
Great exterior color and really nice looking wheels.
iDrive takes some getting used to and the LED screen is a bit datedApr 11, 2013

Beautiful car, fun and comfortable to drive, lots of space. The 3 liter 6 is enough
power to be fun, but not enough to get into trouble. Fit and finish inside are top-
notch. It's a definite step up for me.Mar 09, 2013

This car is great for an everyday user for short or long trips. It is very comfortable, safe, fun to drive, has very little interior noise, and gets good gas mileage. I recommend it to any and everyone. It is the ulitmate driving machine. Oct 30, 2012

Fun car to drive. If you're interested in a driving experience that includes both power and handling, this is the car for you. As intended, you will feel the road as the car is almost one with it. Enjoyable experience.Aug 05, 2012

Performance - above par.
Quality - most exact specs of a car. Tight fit, no rattles.
Appearance - sleeper and sensible. An acquired taste to like.
Reliability - it has not disappoint me yet.
Super fun to drive, versatile, spacious, and room for my dog.Aug 03, 2012

I love BMW's, but this one has had too many recalls. BMW charges for stupid things like resetting the computer. Other then that I love the car and it is fun to drive and pass people with no problem. ByeJul 24, 2012

I trust my families life with this car. I know she won't be left stranded and although the cost is high, I think it's dependibility and warantee of 4 yrs, 50, 000 miles bumper to bumper to include servicing is a beautiful thing!Mar 04, 2012

I drive a LOT 1000 miles a week. And I finally feel safe and comfortable when I'm travelling. It handles great. It is very quick but not at jumping off the line from a dead stop. The trade off is I get GREAT gas mileage. The car is wonderfully engineered. And it is beautifully detailed inside and out. If you get one, get a cargo organizer for the trunk and get some storage for the interior if you carry a lot of things. I do get a little bit of aggression on the road. I don't drive aggressively but people get aggressive with me in the BMW. Interesting and true. I drove a 2011 528i for 2 weeks while my DVD was being swapped out. I do NOT like it as well as the 2008. I do like the Nav better but it's bigger, harder to see around it, feels wrong, the Cruise controls arene't like the 08- I don't like them. The 2008 is still sports-like. the 2011 is more luxury feeling. I prefer the smaller feel and sports handling of the 08. The Continental tires are not the run-flats and I am still putting miles on this original set at 89000 miles on the odometer. The run-flats are expensive and my friends have had to replace theirs at 30K miles. The MPG is higher with the Continentals too.
I love this car. Jan 29, 2012

The BMW 550i is wonderful vehicle with great styling, performance and a size suitable for a family. So far reliability has been great, but maintenance cost has been on the high side. Overall a very good car that can't be beat in this class.Dec 26, 2011

I have nothing but praise for this car. I have had several 5 series and this is one is good as the rest. They have all been very reliable, well built, solid vehicles. What I really like about this one is the sport suspension and seats - fabulous. Enjoyable to drive and own. Dec 17, 2011

wish it had a SMG transmission. shifts slowly in manual mode, but handles well and has good acceleration. Has excellent cargo space especially with rear seats folded down. The I drive is intuitive counter to popular criticism. I have a CPO and the warranty is excellent.Nov 24, 2011

The 2008 535i has a prescence about it that really hides the power that it has. One is simply amazed at the power that the 3.0L twin turbo produces even at half throttle. Match that with the right color combo (i prefer Monaco Blue Metallic on Saddle Brown Leather) and you have one of the most stunning sedans out there in it's price range.Sep 27, 2011

Very well built and comfortable for long drives. Plenty of power and very reasonable fuel ecomony. Vehicle is a pleasure to drive and so far has been very reliable. Would have opted for a darker interior but it has proven easy to clean and durable.May 28, 2011

My 3rd BMW, only owned for 2 months; Purchased as CPO with 41K miles, really loaded with options. Performance is stellar; loves mountain roads. Premium and sport packages with sport automatic trany make the car so much more. Economy is good (especially for a 300 HP car).Aug 15, 2010

Bought this car used from a BMW dealership without it being certified pre-owned. This saved me about $3,000. It has nearly every option including the $4,300 M sport package.
This is the 12th BMW I've owned in the past 15 years and the one I'm most happy with. (Still own my 2002 525i with nearly 200,000 miles on it) The 550i performs outstanding in every aspect. Its equipped with the automatic but when placed in manuel mode, comes off the line strong and shifts very smoothly. Handling is excellent as is the breaking. And compliments - get them every time I pull into a gas station, toll booth plaza or just stopped in traffic. The sport package sits low and looks very aggressive. Super looks, performance, breaking and not to bad on gas for such a powerful and heavy car. There's nothing negative about this BMW.
Having two teenagers in the house it's the perfect car to transport them while still having a car with style, performance and safety. Jun 12, 2010

Great performance. Accelerating greatly after 60mph. Bit like driving
an armchair, however when you get up to higher speeds the car takes
action and is the best place to be ever! It feels safe, quick, smooth and
comfortable. It is roomy. Lots of space for all your kids toys, prams,
food, and various needs! It took us all the way to Denmark & back
from England without much trouble. It is a great family touring car,
with incredible speed and power. It is fun to drive to a certain
extent...but if you like the power of changing gears and racing at the
lights...then this car is not for you!Jun 03, 2010

The steering felt good. The performance for such a small engine was pretty good, and it could accelerate. The feeling of the steering and the car in general was excellent. It felt very strong in terms of build quality. Its brakes were good, but this car is definitely not a track car.Jun 15, 2009

Love this car-- so fast-- not a big fan of the free
service.. Took forever every time I took this car in for
service.. The cost of ownership was nothing.
Everything was free. The car was a blast to drive..
Drive it up to the mountains and it hugs the turns..

Performance - acceleration, braking, handling
Build Quality - Has only been sent in for very minor
things, like iPod connector and need oil topped off
Appearance - add the sports package and comes with
M series and rims and shifter
Cost of Ownership - Well it definitely like to eat gas
especially the way I drive
Fun Factor - Doing 60 and stepping on the gas and
flying past everyone else on the road.Oct 26, 2008

Drives like a dream. Way better than any Japanese car I ever driven. No rattles, this thing rides on rails and is solid as they come. Wish I went for the manual, but automatic was still fun. The only thing I didn't like was that the sound system was lacking in bass.Oct 14, 2008

Well, The twin turbo keeps its 0-100 in 5.2 sec-promise. Mine is white with white leather and it looks pretty sharp, I must admit. It simply drives like a dream. Extreme comfort without loosing the sensation of sporty and crisp reaction and performance.
The palette of accessories is created under the philosophy: "If we can think of it, lets make it". It comes with a lot standard and the rest of it exists with guarantee.
On the economic side. Well it is rather thirsty (<20 mpg if you do not drive carefully. A On the pros side (in the US at least) BMW USA has a 4 year zero cost service program included. We were also looking at Mercedes, Audi and Porche. None of these gave this option.
I have never driven a better or more complete car. But it changed my driving pattern in the more aggressive direction :-)Aug 13, 2008

This car is absolutely amazing. It is a gorgeous car both inside and out. Its performance gives it that true racecar feel that it deserves and its owner deserves. The new technologicaly advanced GPS and computer is extremely easy to use and good for someone driving who might only have a couple of seconds to look at it.Aug 01, 2008

Fantastic acceleration and good gas mileage. Absolutely no compromises. Handles great through the corners, setup for a little bit of understeer, but you can create oversteer with a little extra throttle. One of the best engines in the world...period.Apr 06, 2008
