A nice blend of performance and luxury is found in the 2006 Nissan Altima SE-R, which is outfitted to take full advantage of the 3.5-liter, 24-valve, 250-hp DOHC V6 engine. It comes with a choice of a 5-speed manumatic or its own 6-speed manual transmission. It also features a stiffer sports suspension than the 3.5 SE, larger 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, bigger brakes, xenon headlights, supportive sport seats, and chrome exterior trim. Inside is much like the SL, with heated leather seats, power features, a security system, trip computer, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls for the CD changer, a sunroof, leather accents, and automatic climate control. The 2006 Altima SE-R adds heated mirrors as well.
On the outside, the SE-R gets a rear spoiler, in keeping with its image. Automatic headlights (with delay), foglights, front and rear disc brakes with 4-wheel ABS, and dual front airbags with a passenger deactivation sensor keep the sporty front-wheel drive sedan in the high range for safety ratings. Side airbags for both rows and traction control are optional, as is a new satellite radio. The navigation system is not offered on the 2006 Altima SE-R. Performance, power, and pickup rank high with owners, who also love the smooth ride, interior space, and overall style. Major torque steer is an issue.
