Much better equipped than the base model, the 2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 S is the next step up in Nissan's best-selling front-wheel drive mid-sized sedan, and one of the most popular trims.  As its name implies, a 2.5-liter, 175-hp DOHC I4 engine sits under the hood, with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.  The 2006 Altima 2.5 S adds a lot more features, including air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, a CD player, tilt and telescopic steering, and variable power steering.  Like the base model, dual front airbags are also standard, earning 5-star frontal impact ratings.

The 2006 Altima 2.5 S comes with a fully independent suspension and front and rear disc brakes, as well as 16-inch wheels with all-season tires.  ABS brakes are optional.  Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and feature a trunk pass-through that doubles as an armrest.  There are a few more options offered with the 2.5 S, including a new satellite radio, foglights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a power sunroof.  A Special Edition package adds power seats, automatic headlights, and wheel-mounted audio controls.  Highlights include the surprising amount of roomy, the style, and peppy acceleration for an I4 engine.  Drivers mention that there is some highway noise and that the front armrest is located too far back.
