2009 Ford Flex SE

The entry-level trim for this new crossover MINI-inspired minivan, the 2009 Ford Flex SE seats seven in three rows and holds between 15 and 83 cubic feet of cargo, depending on whether both second and third rows and the front passenger seat are folded flat. The front-wheel-drive crossover rides on a four-wheel independent suspension, powered by a 24-valve, 3.5-liter DOHC V6. Paired with a 6-speed automatic, the powertrain puts out 262 hp and 248 ft-lbs of torque at 4,500 RPM. Equipped with optional trailer wiring, towing power maxes out at 4,100 pounds.

Although not yet tested for impact, the 2009 Flex SE comes fully equipped with safety features. 18-inch alloy wheels feature a tire monitor. Traction and stability control, a front stabilizer bar, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all three rows are also standard. Rear parking sensors help when backing up. In the lighting department, the crossover offers up standard foglights, automatic headlights with halogen lamps, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Headlights are also activated when you turn on the windshield wipers.

Convenience features abound in this base model. A full power setup includes a 6-way power driver's seat, keypad entry, and wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls. The CD/MP3 player features an MP3 input jack. Intermittent front and rear wipers, a trip computer, tachometer, temperature display and compass, ten cupholders, and 12V power outlets in the two front rows and cargo area are also standard. Leather wraps around the steering wheel and shifter, along with alloy trim on the dash. The third row splits 50/50, while the second-row bench splits 60/40. Second-row captain's chairs are available. A 6-CD changer with satellite radio is also optional, along with Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, and roof rails.
