2008 BMW 650i Summary
The BMW 650i two-door coupe received a few minor updates for 2008, including a reshaped front and rear end, and a new optional six-speed Sport Automatic Transmission, which gives drivers the capability of choosing between automatic or manual shift modes. Drivers can shift manually using paddle shifters located on the steering wheel. A Sports button makes the new shifter more dynamic, according to BMW.
In addition, BMW has added new interior color choices for 2008.
A 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter double-overhead-cam V8 engine powers the rear-wheel-drive 650i coupe. The engine links to a six-speed manual shifter, which comes standard.
A sport-tuned suspension and speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering ensure that the 650i handles nimbly in tight curves, although some drivers find the ride a bit stiff. Active roll stabilization (ARS) and Dynamic Stability Control help keep the 650i on the road in tricky conditions, while electro-hydraulic antilock brakes give the 650i all the stopping power it needs.
The 650i comes equipped with such interior features as Dakota leather upholstery, brushed aluminum interior trim, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, dynamic cruise control, and a 10-speaker AM/FM audio system with a CD player and MP3 capability. A navigation system with voice feedback also comes standard, although it's accessed, like all the interior electronics, by BMW's iDrive system, which some drivers find overly complicated.
While the 650i can carry four passengers, drivers note that the back seats can be cramped for adults. In addition, some reviewers point out that some of the 650i's competitors offer a more comfortable ride and better value. Still, as the largest coupe available from BMW, the 650i has plenty to offer discerning drivers.
