Four-wheel drive was a popular choice on the Eddie Bauer trim of the 2003 Explorer; Ford's Control Trac system enabled drivers to choose automatic four-wheel drive or to engage full-time dual-axle power in adverse conditions.

Choosing the 4WD option on their Eddie Bauer 2003 Ford Explorer gave buyers the opportunity to take the SUV off-road.  Still, the big cargo space and many safety features were probably a more important selling point for buyers of the 2003 Explorer than the lure of four-wheeling.
