[Edit] Take one part Sportlich (sporty), one part Leicht (light), and a dose of Kompakt (compact) and what you end up with is the Mercedes SLK class. Launched in 1997, the car was an immediate hit and addressed some of the concerns drivers raised about the heavier, SL roadsters.
One of the luxury roadster's most famous and endearing features is its retractable hardtop. The feature revived the retractable hardtop's usage in modern automobiles and was soon followed by similar features in cars built by Peugeot and Lexus.
The SLK was updated in 2004 with a new Formula One-inspired appearance and serious performance enhancements allowed it to make Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2005. The SLK also won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Convertible award.
