Land Rover Range Rover

For nearly three decades, Land Rover has offered this pioneering SUV which combines British luxury with Land Rover's go-anywhere abilities.  For most of that time, the Range Rover was in a class by itself, in both the price and capability categories. New luxury competitors from Mercedes, Infinity, and Lexus have been emerging during the last ten years, but the Range Rover still stands alone off the road.
The Range Rover first appeared in 1970 as a rather awkward looking 2-door model.  It did not become available in the United States until 1987.  Before that, it arrived here only as a Grey Market import. Until the 1993 arrival of the Defender 110, the Range Rover was Land Rover's only representation in the U.S.
The Range Rover entered its second generation in 1995, thanks to the addition of new engines and luxuries, and a full styling overhaul.  A height-adjustable air suspension system headlined the innovations.
The third and current generation of Range Rover began in 2003, with a new body style built upon a unibody construction.  The Supercharged variation could now zip from 0 to 60 mph in just seven seconds.
Recent updates include the addition of a new Range Rover Sport model in 2006, and a mild face lift for 2007.  The Sport now provided a performance-oriented variation with similar off-road capabilities.
