[Edit] Revised in 2005, the A6 receives only minor changes for 2008. New for 2008, Audi has added the S-line exterior trim, satellite radio, seatback storage pockets, and headlight washers as standard equipment.
There are two engine choices in the basic model: the 3.2-liter, 255-hp V6 and, rare in this category, a 4.2-liter, 350-hp V8. Considering its 4,000-pound bulk, the A6 moves along nicely with the V6 doing the 0-60 regime in 6.8 seconds and the V8 in 5.8 seconds. Gas mileage on the V6 gets an EPA estimate of 19/26 mpg City/Highway; reviewers got 23 mpg in long term testing. The V8 gets an EPA estimate of 18/25 mpg. Both engine choices couple to a six-speed automatic with manumatic shifting and the great Audi Quattro four-wheel-drive system. A CVT front-drive model is also available.
Overall, the six-speed transmission is smooth and sophisticated, though some reviewers complained of abrupt downshifts. The A6 performs well as a highway cruiser given its refined weather proof four-wheel-drive system and quiet, elegant interior. As with most Audis, the interior draws superlatives, with only the Multi Media Interface (Audi's vehicle management system - entertainment, communication, and nav systems) drawing criticism for its complexity.
All 2008 A6 models include an impressive array of standard safety features: antilock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, stability control, tire-pressure monitor system, front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags with optional rear-seat airbags. The A6 received the top ratings in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
Handling is excellent with precise steering and a good road feel. The Quattro system provides superior grip in all cornering situations. The adaptive air suspension provides an overall firm ride that is well dampened for uneven road surfaces.
The A6 with its impressive array of technology and fine fit and finish competes against the likes of the other midsize luxury sedans: BMW 5 series, Mercedes E-class, Cadillac STS, Acura RL, and the Infiniti M35.
