[Edit] The ever-increasing luxury factor of the Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to be evident in 2007. As far as domestic vehicles go, it's a fine contender for the SUV-buyer who wants an American-made, mid-sized SUV with comfort features, style, and a fair amount of fancy gadgetry.
Some of that gadgetry pertains to comfort, some to communications technology, and some to performance, and some to efficiency, but the most important advances made on this model in recent years have been safety-related. The Grand Cherokee did not achieve 5-star ratings in the NHTSA crash tests until the current generation, which began in 2005.
In addition to multi-stage driver and passenger air bags with front and rear side-curtains, the Grand Cherokee features knee bolsters. But your chance of never getting to know those air bags is a good one, thanks to all of the systems in place to keep you from crashing. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is one. It consists of traction control, brake assist, and Electronic Roll Mitigation. The system senses the need for braking and power reduction at each wheel and transfers the appropriate response where it is needed.
Since this is only the third model year of this generation, the 2007 Grand Cherokee doesn't have a lot of aesthetic changes (although the headlight and taillight design has been updated), but there's big news when it comes to the engines. Jeep is making strides in making these SUVs more efficient.
First, the new 4.7-liter V8 flexible-fuel engine can use straight-up gasoline or the mix of ethanol (85%) and gasoline (15%) known as E85. Due to local laws this engine is not available for sale in California, Connecticut, Maine, New York, or Vermont.
Then there's the 5.7-liter, 330-horsepower Hemi, which sounds like a real gas-chugger. But it isn't really, as it features Multiple Displacement System, a technology that maximizes economy by shutting down half the cylinders in situations (highway cruising between 40 and 60 mph) where running on half-power is sufficient. Another engine choice new this year is a Mercedes-made common-rail diesel (turbo) engine available this year on all but the SRT8, the highest-priced trim, whose raison d'etre is its 6.1-liter V8.
Depending on which engine and transmission your Grand Cherokee has, you can tow up to 7400 lbs. when equipped with optional tow package. If you plan on towing, the optional rear camera, purchased in conjunction with the rear-park assist feature, is a great idea.
The Grand Cherokee is available in four trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and SRT8, with a variety of powertrains. With its wood accents and fancy instrument panel, the Grand Cherokee's interior is lush by old Jeep standards. Higher-priced trims also feature chrome detailing inside.
