CarGurus' 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Review

Volkwagen made an effort to upgrade the "fit and finish" elements of its Jetta models for 2001 with a number of improvements. Interior cloth fabrics were upgraded, for instance, and the cupholders got an update in an effort to make them more durable (they tended to break easily in earlier models). Side-curtain head-protection airbags were offered as optional equipment, audio controls were added to the steering wheels of some models, and the optional sports suspension was tightened up.

Overall, the Jetta was available in a wide variety of trim packages for 2001, including all-new wagons, which came with either a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a 174-horsepower, 2.8-liter V6. The V6 was available in two wagon trim packages, the GLS and the GLX. Air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, and power door locks were among the standard features for all three wagon models. The GLX V6 added power windows and a sunroof, among other features.

The Jetta sedans were similarly available with a number of engine options, including the base 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine; a turbocharged 150-horsepower 1.8T four-cylinder; a 90-horsepower, 1.9-liter TDI diesel engine; and the V6.

The Volkswagen Jetta, and especially the turbocharged models, continued to receive high marks from the drivers, who liked the car's power, styling, build quality, safety features, and handling. As always, though, some drivers noted that the car needed too many trips to the repair shop. There were complaints about VW customer service as well.
