CarGurus' 2005 Ford F-150 Review

Ford's top-selling truck gets a new base engine this year and some new option packages.  The 2005 Ford F-150 is a tough, rugged pickup that can seat either three or six depending on which version you get.  There are five trim levels.  The XL is the work truck, with the STX only slightly better.  The most popular models are the XLT and the Lariat, which offer power features and options like a DVD player and sunroof.  The luxury-oriented Lariat comes with leather upholstery and power front seats.  The FX4 is outfitted for off-roading.  All come standard with a new 4.2-liter, 202-hp V6, matched to a 5-speed manual.  A 4-speed automatic is optional with the V6 but standard with the other two V8 engine choices -- a 4.2-liter, 231-hp or 5.4-liter, 300-hp V8.

Each trim level of the 2005 Ford F-150 is offered in a Regular Cab (seats three in a front bench seat), SuperCab extended, and a Crew Cab.  The Regular and extended cabs feature reverse-hinged doors, while the Crew Cab has traditional doors.  Unlike other pickups, rear windows in the Extended and Crew Cabs roll down.  Bed lengths vary depending on Cab size.  Crew Cabs only offer a 5.5-foot bed, while a 6.5 and 8-foot option is also available with the Regular and Extended.

Drivers have their choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with low-range gearing.  A new Work truck Group Package can be added to the XL, while a King Ranch Package features special Castano leather seats for the Lariat Crew Cab. Sluggish acceleration and low fuel economy are the major complaints, and some drivers have had problems with the 4WD system.  But the 2005 Ford F-150 gets top marks for its ruggedness, solid structure, 5-star crash ratings, and roomy interior.
