Like "a magic carpet ride" in the words of one test driver, the 2004 BMW 745 got high marks for performance. The car's V8 engine is rated at 325 horsepower and 330 pounds-feet of torque, a massive increase over the company's previous V8 and close to matching the output of the previous BMW V12. Perhaps best of all in these pump-conscious times, the car was rated 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway, a 13% increase over the previous V8 engine found in earlier 745's.
In 2004, the 745 was available in two trims: the standard, 745i and the 745Li, which offered a longer wheel base and - expert drivers insist - better handling. While technically an entry level car in the vaulted 7-series (the 760 is the premier car of the line up), the 745 is not cheap, with prices ranging in the high 60's and low .
