BMW launched the 745i and 745Li (with an extended wheel base) in 2002 to replace the outgoing 740. Both models were taller and wider than their predecessor, offering slightly more passenger room and a significantly larger trunk.
Styling of the car was controversial. Critics said the nondescript grill and tear drop shaped headlights, as well as "odd curves and cut lines" at the rear of the car were a "letdown." The car also featured a 4.4 liter, 325 horsepower engine.
