[Edit] Basically a Ford Explorer with more luxury features, the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer rides on a truck-based platform and features either rear-wheel or automatic all-wheel drive. The mid-sized SUV has three rows of seats for seven people, though the third row can be cramped for adults. Both rows fold flat to expand the cargo area from 13.7 to 81 cubic feet. New for 2005, outside seats in the 40/20/40 split-folding second row now recline, for more passenger comfort. Other new additions include a Roll Stability Control feature on the now standard AdvanceTrac stability system, and a new roof rack with side rails. Added options for 2005 are an 8-way driver's seat and a Designer Package for the Premier trim, that offers suede upholstery and 17-inch chrome wheels.
The AWD in the 2005 Mountaineer defaults to a 35/65 front/rear torque split, but engages automatically depending on road conditions. There are two engine choices -- a 4.0-liter, 210-hp V6 or 4.6-liter, 239-hp V8, both coupled with a 5-speed auto tran with overdrive. Torque ranges from 254 to 282. The base Convenience trim stars with full power features, a power driver's seat, and CD player, while the Luxury adds heated leather seats and power passenger seat, and the Premier pampers with a sunroof, CD changer, and parking sensors. All trims earn five stars in crash tests, thanks to standard ABS brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, tire monitor, traction and stability control, and dual front-side airbags. Side curtain bags are optional (standard on Premier).
The Mountaineer is roomy, with its flat-folding third row, and its long list of standard features make it a great family vehicle. The third row is hard to access for all but the smallest riders, and owners complain about the awkward placement of the seat heater controls and the 15/19 fuel economy. But owners and reviewers alike praise the smooth ride, AWD performance, and interior space of the 2005 Mountaineer. The V8 is impressive, especially for towing up to 5600 pounds, but the V6 is adequate for everyday family use. Other highlights include interior comfort and ergonomics and exterior styling.

Why Is the all wheel drive always on unless turned off -- Seems it should be the other way around.
