The Hatchback 5-Door is one of only three trims available for the 2011 Toyota Yaris, presenting a more contemporary, European style for its exterior than the sedan. The interior of the hatchback, however, offers little in the way of standard features, and most desirable options, such as power locks, keyless entry, power windows or even an audio system, must be added through a package of options, which can increase the cost considerably. The hatchback does come equipped with air conditioning, a 5-speed manual transmission (although a 4-speed automatic is an available option) and fabric-trimmed seats with 4-way adjustable front seats, among a handful of standard features. The rear seats come with a fold-down rear bench seat, but the Convenience Package offers additional comfort and room in the rear with a 60/40 split fold-flat rear seat that also reclines and slides. With the rear seats in place, the 5-door Yaris offers only 9.32 cubic feet of cargo room. When the rear is folded, however, the space increases to 25.7 cubic feet.
Standard safety features are plentiful in the Yaris. The Toyota Star Safety System equips the hatchback with standard vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, as well as 6 airbags and Smart Stop Technology, which cuts engine power if the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed simultaneously.
The engine in the 2011 5-door hatchback carries over from last year, with a 1.5-liter DOHC with VVT-i producing 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm. Although the power in the engine is best suited for commuters not seeking performance-driving thrills, the Yaris’s fuel economy is one of the subcompact’s most attractive features. The standard manual transmission delivers 29 mpg city/36 highway, and the available 4-speed automatic achieves a comparable 29/35.
