The front-wheel-drive 2009 Honda Pilot LX is the base model for this midsize SUV. Featuring a car-like Macpherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, the 2009 Pilot LX delivers 250 hp and 253 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 RPM from its 24-valve, 3.5-liter V6 engine. The engine features cylinder deactivation, meaning it can shut down two or three cylinders at cruising speeds to maximize fuel efficiency. Paired with a 5-speed automatic, the engine achieves 17/23 mpg.

The 2009 Pilot LX rides on 17-inch steel wheels with all-season tires. Standard safety features include traction and stability control, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, front and rear stabilizer bars, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all three rows. Front airbags have passenger deactivation. There are anchors for four child seats. A tire monitor and automatic headlights are also standard.

Both second and third rows split-fold flat 60/40, with the second row also moving forward and back. The cargo area starts at 20.8 cubic feet, expands to nearly 48 with the third row down, and 87 with all rows down. The rear window opens separately from the tailgate and has its own intermittent wiper. Full power features include remote entry, a garage remote, and a trip computer. Cruise control, a 7-speaker sound system with CD/MP3 player, a new MP3 jack, a tachometer and compass, and a leather steering wheel are included in the LX package. Two front power outlets are located in the center console and there are cupholders for each row. The cargo area comes with storage compartments and tiedowns. A trailer hitch, to tow up to 3,500 pounds, is also standard. There are no options for the 2009 Pilot LX.

The 2009 Honda Pilot LX 4WD adds extra traction for slippery roads and some moderate off-road use. Although the full-time 4WD system lacks low-range gearing, its Variable Torque Management automatically distributes torque where it's needed and can send up to 70% to the rear wheels. The system increases towing capacity (with the standard trailer hitch) to 4,500 pounds, but reduces fuel economy to 16/22 mpg. Engine power for this midsize SUV comes from a 24-valve, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 and 5-speed automatic that put out 250 hp and 253 ft-lbs of torque. At cruising speeds, two or three of the six cylinders deactivate to improve fuel efficiency.

The 2009 Pilot LX 4WD seats seven comfortably in three rows, with both second and third rows split-folding flat (60/40) and the second row able to move back and forth 3 inches. All rows get cupholders and side curtain airbags. Cargo capacity starts at 20.8 cubic feet and expands to 47.7 and 87 with the third and second rows folded down. An underfloor bin and tiedowns are standard, and access is through the tailgate or independently opening rear window. Inside the 2009 Pilot LX 4WD you'll find power windows, locks, and mirrors, a trip computer, remote entry, a garage opener, and front and rear intermittent wipers. The CD/MP3 player gets a new MP3 jack and is heard through a 7-speaker sound system. Cruise control, a tachometer, a compass, tilt and telescopic steering, and a leather steering wheel are also standard.

Although not yet rated for safety, the 2009 Pilot LX 4WD comes with a full complement of features. These include traction and stability control, a front and rear stabilizer bar, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front-side and side curtain airbags, four child-seat anchors, and electronic brakeforce distribution. A tire monitor measures pressure in the all-season tires on 17-inch steel wheels. Automatic headlights and daytime running lights help with visibility.

Moving up to the 2009 Honda Pilot EX adds significantly more standard features to this front-wheel-drive midsize SUV. The first noticeable addition is a standard roof rack, which adds more cargo options. Foglights have been added, and the 17-inch wheels are now alloy instead of steel. On the inside, you get an 8-way power driver's seat and 4-way power passenger seat. Power mirrors are now heated. Other additions include climate control in all three rows, an exterior temperature readout, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, and a 6-CD changer with MP3 playback and satellite radio.

Under the hood is the 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6 shared by all Pilots. Paired with a 5-speed automatic, it delivers 253 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 RPM and 17/25 mpg. A trailer hitch is standard, and maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. The SUV sits on an independent Macpherson strut front and multilink rear suspension. It comes loaded with safety features, such as 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, and a front and rear stabilizer bar. Dual front-side and side curtain airbags for each row, along with passenger airbag deactivation, are also standard. A tire monitor and automatic headlights round out the equipment.

The 2009 Pilot EX holds up to 87 cubic feet of storage with both second and third rows folded flat. Both rows split-fold 60/40, and the second row adjusts 3 inches forward and back to make more legroom. Second-row legroom is an impressive 38.5 inches. Rear legroom is suitable for kids. There are 12V power outlets in the front, back, and cargo area. Tiedowns and an underfloor compartment help with storage in the cargo bay. The independently opening rear window has its own intermittent wiper. Full power features include remote entry, a trip computer, and a garage remote. Carryover equipment from the LX includes tilt and telescopic steering, a tachometer, a compass, leather trim, and intermittent front wipers.

Full-time 4WD adds extra security in tricky driving conditions in the 2009 Honda Pilot EX 4WD. Its Variable Torque Management defaults to a 50/50 torque split, but goes as high as a 30/70 front-to-rear split. The lack of low-range gearing, however, means this midsize SUV should not be taken on true off-road adventures. The 4WD system increases towing capacity to 4,500 pounds with the standard trailer hitch. This is just in case you need more storage room than the standard roof rack and 87 cubic feet of interior cargo space provide. With both second- and third-row seats up, the SUV holds an impressive 20.8 cubic feet.

As with the front-wheel drive EX, the 4WD version adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, power front seats (8-way and 4-way), power heated mirrors, a temperature gauge, tri-zone climate control for all three rows, and wheel-mounted audio controls for the 6-CD changer and satellite radio. An MP3 input jack is also new this year on all trims. Already standard are power windows and locks, front and rear intermittent wipers, remote entry, a trip computer, a garage opener, leather steering wheel trim, tilt and telescopic steering, a compass and tachometer, and three 12V power outlets (front, back, and cargo). Both rear rows split-fold 60/40, with the second row moving foward and back 3 inches for more legroom and easier third-row access. The cargo area comes with an underfloor storage compartment and tiedowns. Access is through the manual liftgate or separately opening rear window.

A 24-valve, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine and 5-speed automatic deliver 250 hp and 253 ft-lbs of torque. The 4WD system reduces fuel economy to 16/22 mpg, but the cylinder deactivation system seeks to improve fuel efficiency by deactivating two or three cylinders at cruising speed. There are no additional safety features with the 2009 Pilot EX 4WD, but it doesn't really need any. Traction and stability control, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, front and rear stabilizer bars, dual front-side airbags with passenger deactivation, and side curtain airbags for all rows are all standard. Automatic headlights, a tire monitor, and four child-seat anchors are also included.

Leather upholstery and more leather trim on the steering wheel, doors, and consoles represent the L in the 2009 Honda Pilot EX-L. It could also stand for luxury, I suppose, with the addition of a standard sunroof. In the safety department, a rearview camera joins the list of features in this midsize front-wheel-drive SUV. The 2009 Pilot EX-L seats seven in three rows, with 8-way and 4-way power front seats, and 60/40 split-folding second- and third-row seats. The second row also moves back and forth 3 inches. All rows get cupholders and climate controls. With the seats up, the cargo area holds 20.8 cubic feet, and with each row folded flat, it holds 47.7 and 87 cubic feet respectively. Tiedowns, a cargo net, and an underfloor bin are standard, along with a roof rack. The rear window opens separately from the tailgate and has an intermittent wiper.

Riding on an independent Macpherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, the 2009 Pilot EX-L gets its power from a 250-hp, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 with cylinder deactivation. This improves fuel efficiency (17/23 mpg) by running on six, four, or three cylinders at cruising speeds. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic. Standard safety features include 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows. Foglights, daytime running lights, and automatic headlights are also standard, along with a tire monitor.

Carrying over from the EX are full power features, including heated mirrors, remote entry, a garage opener, and a trip computer. On the wheel sit cruise and audio controls for the 6-CD changer with MP3 input and satellite radio. On the dash are a tachometer, compass, and temperature gauge. Three 12V power outlets reside up front, in the back, and in the cargo area. Intermittent front and rear wipers, tilt and telescopic steering, a security system, and a trailer hitch are all included. A DVD player is available.

The family-size 2009 Honda Pilot EX-L 4WD adds a full-time all-wheel-drive system with Variable Torque Management, which delivers up to 70% of torque to the rear wheels. This improves traction on wet roads or soft surfaces, but the full-size SUV lacks the low-range gearing necessary for off-road use. The system works with the standard traction and stability control and 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. Under the hood is a 24-valve, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine, matched to a five-speed automatic. In the 4WD, fuel economy slips to 16/22 mpg, but towing power (with the standard hitch) increases to 4,500 pounds.

The 2009 Pilot EX-L features leather upholstery and trim on the doors, steering wheel, and consoles, as well as a power sunroof. Already standard are the full complement of power features, which includes 8-way and 4-way front seats, heated mirrors, remote entry, a trip computer, and a garage remote. A seven-speaker sound system houses a 6-CD changer with MP3 input jack and satellite radio. Cruise and audio controls are located on the steering wheel. Intermittent front and rear wipers, tilt and telescopic steering, tri-zone climate control, and three 12V power outlets are also standard. A DVD player is standard. More convenience and safety features distinguish the 2009 Honda Pilot Touring from the rest of the pack. A new trim this year, the Touring shares the independent Macpherson strut front and multilink rear suspension with its siblings, along with the 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 253 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 RPM. Matched with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic, it achieves 17/23 mpg and can tow 3,500 pounds with the standard trailer hitch. The midsize, front-wheel-drive SUV seats seven in three rows. The second row moves fore and aft 3 inches. Both rear rows split-fold 60/40 and fold flat, expanding the 20.8-cubic-foot cargo area to 87. Tiedowns are standard, along with a net and underfloor storage, and the rear window opens separately from the tailgate. On the Touring, this tailgate is power-operated. A roof rack is also standard.

New safety additions include Hill Start Assist, which prevents rollback on hills. Front and rear parking sensors are also standard, as are mirrors with turn signals and a voice-activated navigation system. These join traction and stability control, dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows, a front and rear stabilizer bar, and 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. Halogen lamps are housed in automatic headlights. Foglights are also standard. A rearview camera helps when backing up. A tire monitor measures pressure in the 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires.

Bluetooth is standard on the 2009 Pilot Touring, which also adds 2-driver memory settings for the seat and mirrors. Joining the three 12V power outlets is a 115V power outlet. Full power features include heated mirrors, remote entry, a sunroof, 8-way and 4-way front seats, a garage remote, and a trip computer. On the steering wheel sit cruise and audio controls. An upgraded 10-speaker sound system comes with a 6-CD/MP3 player with both MP3 and video input jacks and satellite radio. The system can be outfitted with a DVD player. Leather adorns the seats, wheel, and consoles. A tachometer, temperature display, compass, intermittent front and rear wipers, tri-zone climate control, and tilt and telescopic steering provide further convenience.

Although not intended for off-road travel, the 2009 Honda Pilot Touring 4WD does provide extra security in slippery road conditions. The full-time system uses Variable Torque Management to switch from the default 50/50 front/rear torque setting to anywhere up to 30/70. The system also increases towing capacity to 4,500 pounds. Powering this midsize SUV are a 24-valve, 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 and five-speed automatic. The powertrain puts out 250 hp and 253 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 RPM, with fuel economy averaging 16/22 mpg. The engine features cylinder deactivation, operating on either six, four, or three cylinders for maximum fuel efficiency.

The 2009 Pilot Touring 4WD seats up to seven in three rows, with rear passengers getting their own cupholders, power outlets, and climate control. Both seats split-fold flat and the second row moves back and forth 3 inches for easier third-row access. Legroom measures 41 inches up front and over 38 in the second row. The cargo area starts at 20.8 cubic feet and expands to 87. It has its own tiedowns, net, and underfloor compartment. Access is through a power tailgate or separate glass window, which has its own intermittent wiper. A roof rack is also standard. A 115V power outlet joins the three 12V outlets in the 2009 Pilot Touring. Bluetooth and driver's memory settings are also new. Already standard are power windows, locks, and heated mirrors, a sunroof, remote entry, a garage remote, power front seats (8-way and 4-way), and a trip computer. The dash holds a tachometer, compass, and temperature display. A 10-speaker sound system features a 6-CD player, MP3 and video input jacks, and satellite radio. Leather upholstery and trim decorate the cabin.

Not yet rated for safety, the 2009 Pilot Touring 4WD comes well equipped with a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, traction and stability control, and Hill Start Assist for help on inclines. 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes feature brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. Dual front-side airbags have passenger sensors, and side curtain airbags cover all rows. A navigation system is exclusive to the 2009 Honda Pilot Touring. Other safety features include 17-inch wheels with all-season tires, a tire monitor, foglights, mirrors with turn signals, and automatic halogen headlamps. The only option available is a DVD player with wireless headsets.
