2008 Nissan Versa

The sporty subcompact Nissan Versa enters 2008 with few changes. The front-wheel drive sedan and hatchback house a 1.8-liter, 122-hp inline 4 engine with standard 6-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed automatic with overdrive is optional for the S trim, and a CVT (continuously variable transmission) is available for the SL. New this year, the SL hatchback's Sport Package now extends to the SL sedan. This option bundle features side sills, foglights, a rear spoiler, and extra body cladding.

The 2008 Versa brags that it offers the most leg and headroom in its subcompact class. Indeed, the rear seat is fairly spacious, with 38 inches of legroom. The cargo area in the hatch is 17 cubic inches, but expands to 50 cubic inches when the rear seats fold down. A cargo cover comes standard with the hatch. All trims come with dual front airbags, tilt steering, a tachometer, CD player, tire monitor, and air conditioning, but ABS brakes are optional. Power features are standard on the SL and extra on the S.

Gas mileage is so-so with the Versa, whose biggest selling point is its price and versatility for city drivers. Though a subcompact, it also makes a good starter car for young families.
