The base model S60 came out roaring for the 2006 model year, ready to show off its new turbocharger (with intercooler, thank you very much). Previously the lowest-priced S60 trim came with a 2.4-liter nonturbo, but those days appear to be gone.
Now boasting 208 horsepower, the smallish sedan (medium as far as the Volvo S line is concerned) shows improved acceleration over the 2005, which pleases drivers looking to pass that slow roller on the morning commute.
Its small backseat keeps it from being labeled a family car, although it works OK for kids who are still in car seats. Cargo space can be iffy if two or three people need to pack for more than a weekend away.
Driver reviews are positive for the most part, with many accolades directed toward the vehicle's safety features and comfortable, stylish interior. Nevertheless, one or two 2006 S60 owners feel that quality has declined in recent years, and they have expressed concerns related to reliability.

Style-seeking commuters in cold and wet climates have found just what they're looking for in the S60 2.5T AWD. The car presents moderate efficiency enhanced by Volvo's famous safety features, made all the better with all-wheel drive.
The turbo-powered engine adds pep when called upon, making the zippy little car even more fun to drive. The comfort factor helps too, as the ergonomically-designed seats and many standard amenities help to make long drives seem shorter.
The AWD was improved for the 2006 model year with the addition of computer-controlled Instant Traction, which transfers the appropriate level of torque to the rear axle when the situation calls for. Pretty smart.
User reviews of this model tout its safety record, standard features (many of which would be options on comparable cars), and quiet ride. They suggest improvements to the turning radius, backseat space, and slightly stiff ride.

If you like the basic S60 but require a little more get up and go, give the T5 trim a try. The 5-cylinder, turbocharged engine promises 257 horsepower, plenty for a car of this size. The gas mileage, rated at 20 city and 28 highway, is acceptable, although it could be a mite bit better for these times.
Although it's a stylish and comfortable car, you're probably buying a Volvo for the safety factor. We don't blame you, as the Swedes pack in more lifesavers (air bags, side-impact beams, reinforced passenger safety cage) than many carmakers have even heard of - and you're not going to pay extra.
Comforts and conveniences come standard too: cruise control, trip computer, front and rear fog lights, and heated power mirrors, to name a few. As always, ABS and AC are in the package.
