Just as the base Envoy added the cool new Denali trim in 2005, the Envoy XL SUV got its own supersized version of the stylish variation.  The new addition brought the trim number up to 6, with 2WD and 4WD versions of the SLE, SLT, and Denali.  Otherwise, the GMC Envoy XL continued to earn its reputation as an Xtra Large SUV with 4 doors and room for 7 passengers.

2005 marked the last year in which the XL SLE and XL SLT used the 4.2 L, 275 hp I6 powertrain before getting a power boost to 291 hp.  The XL Denali uses a 5.3 L, 300 hp V8 powertrain with 4 speed automatic transmission.  On average, the 2005 Envoy XL gets you 14 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway.  Unlike the '06 Envoy XL, you can't get stability control.  Max towing capacity ranges anywhere from 6300 to 7000 lbs., depending on the trim.

Overall, drivers like the handling, comfort, and capable engines that the 2005 GMC Envoy XL offers.  However, some consumers warn that the brakes could use some improvement and that gas mileage could come out a little higher for its class.  In the end, you should pick up the 2005 Envoy XL if you like the idea of a stretch Envoy.  The solid quality makes it a good buy for a domestic full-size SUV.
