Delivering 197 horsepower, this was the lower-powered trim of the surviving C70, the coupe version of which was discontinued after the 2003 model year. It was made only with a 5-speed automatic transmission (the HPT was made in both manual and automatic) and achieved an average of 20 mpg city and 26 highway.
This was the last model year before the convertible's re-design and re-release in 2006 as a hard-top convertible. Buyers of the ragtop 2004 C70 hoped that Volvo would improve the car's overgrown turning radius, sub-par cup holders, and problems with the rear visibility with the top up.
Volvo has of course outfitted this sporty little number with the usual safety features, as well as turbo power. The surprisingly spacious backseat is made for two people and although it's comfortable, it can be tight to get into when the top is up.

The peppy 242-horsepower C70 HPT is neither a true sports car nor a luxury car, but is sure looks sharp and is a lot of fun to drive, especially when that turbo boost kicks in. This convertible lived on for another year in its existing design after production of the coupe version was halted after the 2003 model year.
It was made in a 5-speed manual with auto transmission available as an option. The expected Volvo comfort and safety features were present along with the conveniences one should see in a European-built convertible.
The HPT's drivers rave about its sporty acceleration and the attention they always get when driving it, especially with the top down. Most suggest the purchase of the optional rear windscreen to help keep noise to a minimum and also to increase the number of those head-turning top-down days.
There have been many complaints about the car's too-large turning radius. Rear visibility with the top up is also a problem.
