2003 Volvo XC90

Back at the start of this millennium, Swedish minds were really burning some wood. Had the time come for a Volvo SUV? They were going to find out.
The result of this meeting of the minds was an exciting machine called the Adventure Concept Car. Reaction to the ACC showed Volvo that this SUV would be a success, just as their station wagons always have been. But the SUV boom was at its height. Everyone seemed to want one, and gas prices were not yet out of control.
After some final changes, the 2003 XC90 made its world debut at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show. With its safety features, creature comforts, practicality, and road clearance, the vehicle proved extremely popular with families, active professionals, and young singles who wanted utility but weren't ready to see themselves in a wagon. It was built on the same platform as Volvo's largest sedan, the S80.
