The near-luxury 1998 Mercedes-Benz C230 had a slight body restyling, but although Benz's other C-Class cars got bigger engines, the C230's engine remained the same: a 2.3 liter giving 148 ponies, making passing an occasional challenge.
The '98 Benz C230 had a battery recall in 2001, and some drivers have complained of transmission problems, but the car still gets about 26 combined driving mpg, and most drivers are still quite happy driving their now multi-year-old cars, commenting on how happy they are that the paint has stood up so well.
The side-impact airbags, the panicky Brake Assist and the front passenger airbag that knows not to deploy if a child seat is in the front are some of the features drivers enjoy.
Some complain of the "quality," and those who do do not understand what older Mercedes are all about. The interiors are not as plush as a Lexus, but are made of bulletproof materials. This approach places function over form, and this philosophy has been a mainstay for the Germans forever. It's by coincidence that the cars are also beautiful to look at. As far as the rust issue goes near the trim, here's an idea: Wash the car more often. I have had many German cars of all makes. Simple care will help prevent rust. And for those who complain about the cost of repairs, get real. How many cars can go 150,000 miles without a major repair? It's a machine, and machines break from time to time - get over it. Try going over 100k miles in a Taurus without problems now and then.

The 1998 Mercedes-Benz C280 saw some changes this year, most notably in the engine upgrade. The '98 Benz C280 now sports a more fuel efficient 2.8 L V6, which still maintains all its former power.
And, this year, instead of the traditional Mercedes walnut panel interior, there are carbon-fiber-type panels, adding a bit to the perceived sportiness of the car. Changed as well are the front grille, an integrated rear spoiler. The headlights are still square, but the taillights are now covered with a smoky-type covering.
An option on the '98 C280 is what Benz calls the C6 Sport Package which provides leather seats (the seats are still considered by many to a be a bit too firm), 6-spoke alloy wheels, and, interestingly, ivory-colored instrument faces.
Drivers appreciate its power, reliability, and smooth rides, but some still also point to electrical problems in the C280 model.
