Pros

Mercedes heritage and luxury. Smooth 320hp v8. Slick shifting 5 speed auto. Huge one windshield wiper. (pretty nifty)

Cons

No mercedes hood ornament, only in the grill. Expensive to repair (of course it's a $98k benz) LOVES IT

Sl500. 50+ Years Of Motoring Perfection — The acceleration of this car is solid and linear. I also owned a 1989 corvette and in a race the mercedes owned the vette. I've driven the car up to 145MPH and it was just as stable at 145 as it was at 90. With the hardtop off there was a fair amount of wind noise. Put the hard top on and it transforms the car into a quiet and bank vault like GT. The looks are timeless. I was always asked what year it was and when I told them it was a 1996 they always replied NO WAY! I thought it was a 2002!!! The accentric sweep one windshiled wiper is a cool touch. (I'm easily ammused). Push the red button on the middle console and the top unlatches it's self, the rear window raises up. A hard tonneau cover flips up over the rear trunk and the top disappears down into the car. Depress another button on the dashboard and a rollbar deploys it's self for an added sporty look and safety. I would buy this car again in a HEARTBEAT!

Great Collector's Item — only 400 or so made. they actually had to make the car 4 inches longer to fit in the v12 engine. Great smooth and nice looking car.

Pros

Top reasons to drive this car? Build Quality, Performance, Sheer prescence and it's a mercedes.

Cons

If you can't afford the repairs this car probably isn't for you.

As Many Of You Know The Sl Mercedes Is The Finest 2 Seater Gt Roadster. This Model Included. — The acceleration in this car is brutal. My sister was driving my vette and I in the benz and we dusted her! The build quality is typical mercedes BEFORE daimler-chrysler. Pure Daimler-Benz build quality. The exterior appearence is absolutely timeless and beautiful. It was often asked if it was a 2002. Gas mileage was pretty stellar for a 5.0 322hp v8. Repairs on the other hand were typical Daimler-Benz price. 1200 for a convertible top locking cylinder. 1400 for a intake gasket, 1100 for an alternator. But that's about it. It ran like silk and turned heads with the 18'' chrome amg monoblocks. out of 10 for driving and all around feeling this car gives you. I give it an 11.

Love The Car But Everyday New Problems Crop Up, It Seems — Holding off from full review. Only have the car for 2 months, already had problem with Check Engine light and brake lining lights coming up on dashboard. Newly replaced transmission fluid, smell of burnt oil but letting it burn off per mechanic's advice.

Owner for 0 years, 2 months

Miles Driven per Year:5,000

Wonderful Car — Awesome car. The 95-97 SL was at the forefron in it's time. A truly enjoyable car to drive and own, regardless of the cost of ownership (whish is still cheaper than a porsche, dancing horse, etc.) I intend to own this vehicle until I see what's on the other side...

Wouldn't Swap It For Aything Else Of It's Age. — A stylish second car. You need somewhere to stow the hard top in the summer. Boot very small and rear seats for small kids only. It is a heavy car which damps acceleration, but is a solid convertible with minimal scuttle shake.Broad tyres and low centre of gravity means it handles well for such a comfy boulevard cruiser. Not for anyone over 6'2" as the knee room is quite limited. Beautifully smooth 6 cylinder engine and imperceptible auto gear change. Even turns heads now at 15 years of age.

you have what you want in that car, heated power seats, abs, airbags, performance, quality, charm and more

Cons

nothing sucks me but it is not economic

Fantastic — performance is great. still too fast, it can make over 200km/h and you feel confident when you are breaking. handling is easy on dry road, rokiees have got trouble if it rains or snows, but TCS helps to control the car easily. i renew all mechanical parts and i believe that it wont have problem for next 10 years. i had looked for w129 for 6 months and this is one of the best in Turkey. if you are not fanatic you will have trouble because of price of parts and gas milage.
