Ten years after introducing the Astro mini-van, Chevrolet finally added leg room in the front for its 1996 Astro. Also new on 1996 Chevy Astros are
passenger-side airbags, new seats, a new instrument panel, and an improved climate-control system throughout the van with air ducts under the seats. The 1996 Astro also has side window defrosters.
In 1996, Chevrolet reduced the torque by 10 pound-feet on its 4.3L, 190-HP engine. This change caused it to peak at a reduced rpm for improved
driveability.
'96 Chevy Astro owners say the van is spacious and great for hauling and towing. Many report trouble with the transmission, oxygen sensors, front torsion bars, and fuel pump. If you want to take advantage of the maximum cargo space, you must remove two heavy seats; owners report that this is no easy task. Some complain of poor visibility when backing up.
