Which used SUV should I buy? (CX5/CRV/Outback/Venza/Tucson)

Asked by jjjaey Apr 25, 2024 at 08:51 AM about the 2023 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S Premium AWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I am a foreigner who just came to the US for a short term internship. I will be
here for a year if my visa won't be extended or four to seven years if it is
extended. (In other words resale value is one of the most important factors for
me) I am looking for a compact/mid-sized SUV with AWD (Since I am in snowy
state), around $25k-$30k so I found those four cars.  2023 Mazda CX5
Premium CPO 5k miles for $28k (no damage and the dealer noted that it is a
loaner vehicle)  2021 Honda CRV EXL CPO 29k miles for $27.5k (w/minor
damage on carfax, airbag not deployed & it has 2 previous personal owners)
2021 Subaru Outback Touring CPO 32k miles for $27k (w/carfax accident
report on left front, airbag not deployed & previously leased vehicle)  2022
Subaru Outback Premium non-CPO 41k miles for $25k (no damage and the
dealership provides 3 month/3k mile warranty & previously leased vehicle)
Other than those four, I found a CPO 2021 Toyota Venza with 24k miles for
$32.5k (previously leased), which has minor damage but airbag has not
deployed, but the price is slightly more expensive than my budget. I also found
a CPO 2023 Hyundai Tucson XRT with 11k miles for $28k (previously leased as
well) but I want to try something else other than Hyundai and Kia since I am a
Korean.  In terms of resale value, maintenance, fuel economy and things like
that, what do you guys think might be the best option (and the second best as
well) for me?  Thanks in advance for your valuable opinions on comments.

In short term, say a couple years, Korean cars can be OK, but long term they can be repair nightmares. Eliminate anything Subaru, and stay away from newer cars with multiple owners..... For reliability and value retention, narrow your search to Toyota and Honda. Former lease vehicles that recently came off lease at New Car dealers that are that brand are the least risky. You'd probably be happiest with a Toyota RAV4 or Hylander or a Honda CRV or Pilot.
