The manual transmission has changed from the 1997. I’ve had a black 1997 soft top low doors sport, followed by a 2000 white soft top low door sport, followed by a 2005 silver soft top full door sport and now a 2000 white hard top full door Sahara. I love the TJ over the newer JK and the 4.0 is bulletproof averaging 300,000 miles with proper maintenance. The Jeep’s I’ve had with full doors I have purchased low doors for summer and a tonneau cover for the back. Really fun car to drive and get the 6 cylinder for power and reliability.Apr 22, 2021

Great features. Memorable! Yea, the car is good value. The car is not missing anything (as is). I would compare it to a grand cherokee and patriot.Sep 03, 2020

This is a great car for mixed use, varied climate. We owned it for 8 years and had a ball with it and it always started and always ran well. Trips long and short were always enjoyable and its load capacity was great, folding the seats down when necessary. It had a tow package and could haul utility trailers, travel trailers and good sized boats with ease.Mar 12, 2014

My wife and I actually had two of these a 99 and 2000.
There where good small sized SUV's they both had the
4.0 Liter inline 6 with auto trans which them bot solid
runners with more than enough power.
There seem to be quite enough room with rear folding
seats, it had good cabin room.
Gas mileage sucked, both seemed to suffer from poor
mileage. Overall they did do a pretty good job for being
on the smaller side, and I think these are slighty better
than Liberty that replaced it.Jul 08, 2013

I thought that Jeep could make this vehicle more versatile in the snow in the absence of 4WD, although my Jeep had 4WD. I like the space in the trunk and the back row is spacious for a 6 ft or smaller passenger. The air conditioning compressor went bad at 60,000 miles, that was a $1,200 fix. I lacked the turning radius I have in my present car, a Toyota Corolla. The steering on the Jeep was loose, not sharp, like many American cars. My drivers side blind spot was pretty bad b/c the driver side passenger window shape restricts great vision right behind driver's head. I think the seats were average if at all possible, these should be improved. Overall, still a very fun and reliable car to drive and work with.Jan 16, 2013

Fun to take down the narrow trails, it has a killer turning radius and will just about go anywhere. The quick disconnect sway bar really makes it easy to go from challenge to challenge with a little highway driving in between...Jul 29, 2012

over all my wife and I love this jeep but it just no longer fills our needs for a family vehicle, we have taken very good care of this jeep, never been off road or driven hard, very well loved.

Very reliable, acceleration very good, gas milage not the best, very fun to drive, no traction control so u slide out on the highway u turns in the rain, masculine apperance, overall great car for a first time car buyer or a teenager. May 20, 2011

It's the Heavy Weight version of a YJ,CJ And ZJ. But other than that the 4 liter Straight six can produce more power the a V6. My Jeep is not ment for speed but i have pulled F350 diesels out of a ditch with my jeep. Apr 18, 2011

This Jeep XJ was a great vehicle, it had a bulletproof 4.0l straight 6, that made decent power and was torquey as all hell. The handling was good for a lifted jeep and handled as such. Both the apperance interior and exterior to me are very superior to anything jeep made and to me, the best looking and most capable one made. The gas mileage did suck, but with stock 3.55's and 33's that was to be expected, at least until I was gonna upgrade to a lower ratio. Ive personally driven many high, fast or luxerious cars and out of everything I have driven, I always loved driving my XJ the best.Apr 17, 2011

This Jeep has been excellent to me as have my other Jeeps. It is a true tough runner, have had it buried in mud high than any car should be. Suffers from the usual Jeep XJ problems, oil leaks and rust. Many after market modifications are manufactured for Jeep Cherokee's and they are great toys for playing in the mud, snow, sand and rocks.Feb 15, 2011

Its performance is great. Speeds up and brakes well. Handling is okay.
Its built like a tank. Only had to fix front right fender after hittin it into a truck.
Very fun to drive. Pretty cool off road.

Overall, my car is sexy. It's black. With black interior. I just keep it the way it was 9 years ago.
Performance is great. I didn't 160kmph (you don't get to do much in this country, roads are nightmare)
It costs me a lot on gas and maintenance. But it's a beauty. And it works just like new.
I love this car. I'm never gonna sell. It's a great car and I feel good everytime I drive it.

It rides a little bumpy, but it is very dependable. Use it
everyday to go to work. Have used is in snow, dirt,
sand, puddles, and soon red clay. I wish the MPG was
a little better but being as my car is paid off I can
forgive it.Sep 06, 2009

It is lifted and looks almost stock the way that it was done. I would recommend that you pay attention to the brand of lift that you go with and be prepared to have heat issues as they like to get warm and stay that way.Jul 22, 2009

this is a solidly built vehicle (aren't all jeeps??)... my only peeve is that it uses so much gas, but the payoff of a solid, reliable engine and 4 wheel drive make it very much worth it! But then... who didn't know that about a Jeep?? =]Jul 20, 2009

you cant go wrong... it will do anything. the quality of the jeep is amazing, its absolutely bulletproof. loads of torque and i can spin the tires, even with the auto tranny and oversized tires. you can sleep 4 in it, so long as people are cool with sleeping in front seats. back seat folds down for a comfortable two-person sleeping area :DJul 09, 2009

Has good handling and solid contruction, like a tank! but it has not alot of power. it also has very rough suspension, but what do you expect from this vehicle? its not a luxury car. Also not very good on gas.Jun 30, 2009

In the 5 plus years I have owned this Jeep, the only thing that has been replaced is the water pump. I have done the brakes a few times and replaced the spark plugs and air filter, also installed a 3 " Rough Country lift kit and 31 " tires. It has been and continues to be a great vehicleJun 29, 2009

this thing has a 3 and a half inch lift kit, 31 inch tiers. when i bought it i hated it because the motor blew up and it was constantly needing work, my airconditioning dosent work, it still needs some work and i have been driving it for 6 monthes, gas mielage really sucks i get about 12 miles to a gallon, i do need to go mudding to see how it does,Aug 12, 2008

Although Chryslers QC was in the toilet at the time this Jeep was built, my heep is bulletproof. Some of the things that I don't like are the squeaks and rattles, but these are worsened by the off-road adventures that make it so fun to own. I'm seeing approx. 20 MPG at best hwy with 32" tires and a 3.5" lift kit, which to say the least isn't great, but if I wanted good fuel mileage, I'd buy a Smart car.Aug 10, 2008

I love the performance in my jeep. it has a blora exhaust hit and a custom fitted turbo. it is putting out approx.269 hp. on the highway my passing from 60-80 is amazing. It has a solid chassis, ive had no problems yet. i just wish it was a little bit more roomy. my last truck was a 98' ford explorer. i love the green color, i realy wish it was black. a friend a macco offered to do a metalic black and clear coat for $500. i think im going to do it eventauly. i paid $5,000 for the truck and all the addons came to about $1,250 so i would roughly estimate it worth to $7,000. i pay about $40 a week in gas and it gets about 17mpg highway and 11 city. its a great drive i would highly recomend it as a first car or a fun daily driver.Jul 17, 2008

I can run over anything, I have 120K on it, and it will pretty much blow you off the line. It is great as a daily driver and as a utility vehicle. I just wish it has better gas mileage, my fault though for making it as bad ass as it is.Jul 13, 2008

I love this car... it rides and handles like a dream. I have over 180 thousand miles on it, and it still runs like a champ! (No, I didn't put all these miles on it>> )Jun 26, 2008

I like the offroad capability, the solid body, and the 4.0L is bulletproof, but some of the engineering could be better, like the leaf spring front and rear bolt locations and the rear shock uppper bolts, but all in all I'm pleased with my jeep.Jun 15, 2008

Amazing performance off roading, but sub par on the road. Very reliable and very well built. Nearly all maitenance can be done by yourself if you want to. Gas Mileage is'nt that great, I only get about 13 mpg and on hwy only about 17 mpg, which is really pretty terrible. Mar 15, 2008

This Jeep has been the best investment I have made. I bought it with a 4 inch lift kit and oversized tires, and also had some mods put on the engine. The handling, acceleration, and traction are amazing. The only problem is, as with most SUV's, it sucks up gas.Jan 27, 2008
