[Edit] Sporty in name and appearance only, the 2009 Toyota Corolla S gets much of the same body kit as the XRS, but not the same engine. It shares the 1.8-liter, 132-hp DOHC I4 with the more standard trims. However, the S gets a 5-speed automatic in addition to the 5-speed manual transmission. Torque is around 128 ft-lbs and fuel economy measures 27/35 mpg. The 2009 Corolla S also rides on 16-inch alloy wheels and adds sporting elements such as front and rear underside spoilers, rocker moldings, foglights, black headlamp housing, chrome exhaust tip, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Sport seats keep front passengers snug, though significant understeer and front-wheel drive doesn't really let you enjoy taking the curves.
Dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows are standard, along with ABS brakes. Traction and stability control cost extra. A tire monitor is newly standard this year. Air conditioning, a 6-speaker CD/MP3 system that's satellite-ready, tilt and telescopic steering, remote entry, and a full power setup are all part of the 2009 Corolla S package. In addition to optional cruise control, navigation system, sunroof, and an upgraded JBL sound system, you can get leather upholstery for the S. As with all trims, rear seats split-fold onto a 12.3 cubic foot trunk.
