The Toyota Highlander returns without change for 2006. The Camry-based crossover SUV is Toyota's top-selling sport utility, combining the handling and fuel efficiency of a car with the convenience of an SUV. The Highlander has changed little since its 2000 introduction, but a new larger model will arrive in 2008.
This Highlander is the most well-equipped of the four base trim variations, adding a 4x4 drive train and a more powerful engine. A 3.3 liter DOHC V-6 generates 215 horsepower and 222 pound feet of torque, and is teamed with an electronically controlled five speed automatic transmission. This model earns an EPA rating of 18/24 mpg, and the addition of the V-6 has bumped towing capacity from 3000 to 3500 pounds.
The base Highlanders are equipped with standard features like power windows and door locks, air conditioning, keyless entry, a six speaker CD audio system, and 16 inch steel wheels. The third row of seating is optional on this trim, as is an in-dash CD changer, leather trim, and a JBL audio upgrade. The base model is not eligible to receive the navigation system.
