[Edit] Ford decided to celebrate its 100th birthday by doing something crazy -- expanding beyond its conservative sedans and heavy duty trucks to revive its race-winning GT from the 1960s. The new supercar 2005 Ford GT pays homage to the GT40 that took Le Mans by storm, but adds more comfort and sophistication for modern drivers. The rear-wheel drive coupe features a supercharged, mid-mounted 5.4-liter, 500-hp V8 with 500 lb-ft of torque. The extra power is to accommodate the heavier weight of the GT, as compared to the GT40, without sacrificing speed. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, and top speeds hit 207 mph.
The new GT features innovations such as aluminum body panels, but pays homage to the GT40 with its low-slung muscular profile. 18 inches longer, and four inches taller, with nearly an inch more headroom, the 2005 Ford GT comes with leather seats, ABS brakes, power features, and a CD player, but keeps the instrument panel setup from the GT40. Twin hood scoops are supplemented by side scoops, 18-inch and 19-inch wheels keep a good grip on the road, and Brembo brakes are large and responsive.
Ford's new exotic car comes only in red with a twin racing stripe down the middle, just to let people know this really is a sports car. Unfortunately, the 2005 GT is also very rare, as only around 1500 were made, and most of these were scooped up by Ford employees or dealers. The idea was that scarcity would build up its mystique, and thereby increase its overall appeal. The few owners out there are giddy with the V8 power and performance, and easily overlook the low fuel economy, high sticker price, uncomfortable seats, and the gaudy striping.
