The Toyota Prius Plug-in Advanced, which makes its debut for the 2012 model year, can travel on electric power alone at speeds of up to 62 mpg for up to 15 miles at a time. The Plug-in receives the same Hybrid Synergy Drive, consisting of a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor, as the other Prius trims, but it also gets a new 4.4-kilowatt, 176-pound lithium-ion battery pack, replacing the standard nickel-metal-hydride battery. Owners can charge the battery using a typical household outlet and a 24-foot battery charging cable, which stows in the Prius Plug-in's trunk when not in use. When operating on electric power alone, the Plug-in achieves a miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) of 84 MPGe, and it manages a still-impressive 49 mpg when operating in hybrid mode.
The Prius Plug-in Advanced receives a number of standard features not found on the base Plug-in trim, including SofTex upholstery, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and Dynamic Cruise Control. In addition, the Plug-in Advanced comes equipped with premium HDD navigation and 8 energy-efficient JBL GreenEdge speakers, all part of the vehicle's Display Audio system, which incorporates such features as an AM/FM radio, Sirius XM satellite radio, a backup camera and Bluetooth, all accessed through a 6.1-inch touchscreen display. The system also includes Toyota's new Entune feature, which integrates with a smart phone via an app, enabling the driver to search for restaurants and stores, shop for movie tickets and check sports scores, traffic and weather.
Other standard features for the Prius Plug-in Advanced include heated front seats, automatic climate control, a Smart Key system with push-button start, a multifunction tilt/telescopic steering wheel, a 60/40-split rear seat and power windows and door locks. Power side mirrors, a rear spoiler and 15-inch alloy wheels are among the standard exterior features, while safety features include 7 standard airbags and Toyota's Star Safety System with vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. Hill Start Assist, another standard feature, aids the driver when starting from a full stop on a hill.
