The Cross Country version of the Volvo formerly known as the 850 might just be the hippest station wagon on four wheels. It's not your father's station wagon - unless of course you've got a really cool dad.
XC is the updated and streamlined name of the Cross Country, which began as a trim of the V70 wagon in 2001 but was so popular that it became a separate model in 2002. The name evolved when Volvo's first true SUV, the XC90, debuted in 2003

It's also about the safest darned passenger car you can hope to find yourself behind the wheel of, with Volvo's abundant safety features: a full slate of air bags, an energy-absorbing interior and safety-cage passenger compartment, a collapsible steering column, and the legendary side-impact protection system (SIPS). You even have protection when hit from behind, as the Whiplash-Protection System (WHIPS) moves the head restraints slightly backward upon impact, limiting injury.
