The Cross Country version of the Volvo formerly known as the 850 might just be the hippest station wagon on four wheels. It's not your father's station wagon - unless of course you've got a really cool dad.
XC is the updated and streamlined name of the Cross Country, which began as a trim of the V70 wagon in 2001 but was so popular that it became a separate model in 2002. The name evolved when Volvo's first true SUV, the XC90, debuted in 2003
This practical vehicle is great for carpooling, picking up groceries or home-improvement supplies, or long family road trips.
It's also about the safest darned passenger car you can hope to find yourself behind the wheel of, with Volvo's abundant safety features: a full slate of air bags, an energy-absorbing interior and safety-cage passenger compartment, a collapsible steering column, and the legendary side-impact protection system (SIPS). You even have protection when hit from behind, as the Whiplash-Protection System (WHIPS) moves the head restraints slightly backward upon impact, limiting injury.
The 208-horsepower engine delivers acceptable fuel economy at an estimated 19 city/26 highway. Drivers of the 2006 XC70 sing praises on its spaciousness and substance. It's the perfect choice for those who need this kind of functionality but don't wish to drive a typical SUV.
