Demand for the 1998 Ford Expedition exceeded production in the full-size SUV's sophomore year. Buyers sought out the Expedition for its size, its surprisingly agile handling, and its interior comfort.
The '98 Expedition was offered in two trim choices, XLT and Eddie Bauer. The Eddie Bauer trim line was targeted, like its namesake Seattle outfitters, at buyers looking for luxury with an outdoorsy feel; it delivered features like captain's-chair seats and leather upholstery. The baseline XLT trim offered plenty of high-end features, though, including dual airbags, antilock brakes, and height-adjustable seatbelts.
An optional third seat brought the 1998 Expedition's passenger capacity to 9. The '98 Ford Expedition also provided a giant 118 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Under the hood, "big" was the watchword as well. Buyers had a choice of two overhead cam V-8 Triton engines; a 4.6 liter with a 215 horsepower output, or an upgrade to a 5.4 liter, 230 horsepower model.
