2019 Porsche Panamera
The second generation of the Porsche Panamera arrived for 2017. For 2019, it carries over.
The basic Panamera is a sleek 5-door liftback designed to comfortably seat four or five occupants across two rows. It includes 17.6 cubic feet behind the back seats, which increases to 47.3 with the standard 60/40 split-folding seat down.
The base Panamera houses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine making 330 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, all of which goes to the rear wheels courtesy of Porsche’s PDK 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Panamera 4 trim includes the same engine and transmission and adds a performance all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The 4S benefits from a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6, which makes a heartier 440 hp and 405 lb-ft, and includes AWD. Both the 4 and 4S trims are available with a Sport Chrono Package. The Sport Turismo features a more squared-off cargo area, making it something of a sport wagon. The cargo area has 18.3 cubic feet with the seats up and 49 with them down. The Executive version of the Panamera has a longer wheelbase, which translates into more legroom for second-row passengers.
The Panamera GTS gets visual enhancements like gloss black exterior details in place of the exterior chrome, unique wheels, and upgraded running gear. It features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 453 hp and 457 lb-ft, AWD, and the 8-speed PDK unit. A Sport Chrono Package is also available.
The Turbo includes the same twin-turbocharged V8 as the GTS, only with 550 hp and 567 lb-ft, and can reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package. It’ll reach a top speed of 190 mph and comes standard with AWD.
The Panamera 4 and 4 Executive get 19 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The 4S and 4S Executive lose 1 mpg in city and combined driving. The GTS returns 16 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined.
Finally, the Panamera is also available as a hybrid. The E-Hybrid range leverages the power of the V6 or V8 engine and couples it with an electric motor and 14.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The 4 E-Hybrid gets the twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6, for a combined 462 hp and 516 lb-ft. The 4 E-Hybrid returns 51 MPGe combined along with a range of 14 miles on electric power.
The Turbo S E-Hybrid includes the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, netting an astounding 680 hp and 626 lb-ft, enough to get you to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds. The Turbo S E-Hybrid returns 48 MPGe combined with the same 14-mile electric range.
The list of standard items on the Panamera includes 19-inch wheels, dynamic chassis control, a power liftgate, dual 7-inch instrument cluster displays, a 12.3-inch touchscreen LCD with Apple CarPlay, 8-way power seats, a 10-speaker audio system, front and rear USB ports, satellite radio, LED exterior lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and partial-leather upholstery. Full leather, an adaptive 18-way sport front seat, a Bose sound system, soft-closing doors, cooled seats, memory settings, dynamic and self-cleaning headlights, and a panoramic sunroof are just some of the Panamera’s options.
In the way of safety, every Panamera comes with a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors. A surround-view camera, lane-keeping assist with traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, blind-spot monitoring, a head-up display (HUD), and night-vision assist are available additions. The Panamera hasn’t been crash-tested, but that’s par for the course on vehicles at this price point.
The Porsche Panamera effortlessly splits the differences between a sedan like the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a true sports car, such as the brand’s own 911.
