2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

After over twenty years on the market, the iconic Jeep Wrangler (derived from a vehicle that has been around for a lot longer than twenty years) rolls into the 2007 model year with maybe the biggest change of its career—a new 4-door model dubbed the Wrangler Unlimited. Although the Unlimited should help keep the Wrangler viable in an increasingly competitive segment, it should be noted that Jeep’s best-known vehicle has a solid reputation and a committed following, and should be able to hold its own without any too drastic concessions to off-road performance and styling.
In that regard, the Wrangler Unlimited is not a serious departure from the regular 2-door Wrangler. Both sport the same familiar style, with the signature 7-slot grille, round headlamps, removable soft top and doors, fold-down windshield, and tailgate-mounted spare tire. Built on a 116-inch wheelbase (as opposed to the 2-door’s 95.4-inch wheelbase), the Wrangler Unlimited can carry 5 passengers in 2 rows of seating and has a cargo capacity of 46.4 cubic feet behind the second row of seats or 86.7 cubic feet with those rear seats folded down. The Wrangler Unlimited also has the unique honor of being the only 4-door convertible on the market.
The Unlimited lineup mirrors that of the 2-door, with the base X, the Sahara, and the top-shelf Rubicon. Both while all 2-door Wrangler trims come with standard 4-wheel drive (4WD), the Unlimited X and Sahara start with standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) and add 4WD as an option. The Unlimited Rubicon does include standard 4WD.
Powering the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited is a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 202 hp and 237 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, with a 4-speed automatic optional. Fuel economy numbers come in at 17 mpg city/21 highway with RWD, 16/19 with 4WD and the automatic, and 17/19 with 4WD and the manual. Select the optional towing package and your Wrangler Unlimited will be able to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
As with the Wrangler, the Wrangler Unlimited is at its best off road. The X and Sahara trims include a Command-Trac part-time 2-speed transfer case, a Dana 30 front axle, Dana 44 rear axle, and an optional Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential. The Rubicon adds Dana 44 front and rear axles, a Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case, electric front- and real-axle lockers, an Active Sway Bar system, and 32-inch BFGoodrich off-road tires. The Wrangler Unlimited’s body-on-frame design rides on a 5-link coil suspension, for better performance on the pavement as well as off.
Don’t expect too much from the Wrangler Unlimited’s interior. The Wrangler has always been known for its minimal interior appointments. A Freedom Top hard top is available to replace the standard Sunrider soft top, and there are hundreds of different ways to arrange the top, door, and windshield. Drain plug holes set in the floor will even allow you to hose out the interior, should your off-road adventures get especially rough.
Although the Wrangler is not a family-oriented vehicle, it does feature safety equipment like dual front airbags, 4-wheel antilock brakes, electronic rool mitigation, and optional side-mounted airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited scores of Good on the small and moderate frontal-overlap tests and Marginal on the side-impact test. As noted, however, the Wrangler enjoys its reputation for reasons other than safety, including excellent off-road performance and a unique look.

by Guru9DKYC7As an ‘older guy’ my memories of the Jeep were of ‘fun, but not solid and not comfortable. The 2013 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited is very solid, comfortable, and has a great ride!
