2016 Ford F-350 Super Duty

When a three-quarter-ton full-size pickup doesn’t quite do it, Ford offers its potent 2016 F-350 Super Duty lineup to pull bigger trailers and haul heavier payloads. Furthermore, for the upcoming model year, this hefty workhorse is slated to do all that more efficiently with military-grade aluminum body panels and a new high-strength steel chassis, which have worked out well for the automaker’s current F-150 stable. Curiously, Ford isn’t making much of a big deal about its Super Duty pickups debuting the next-gen sheet-metal and underpinnings, which will at least offer a slightly new look. Also expected for the upcoming year is a bit of shuffling among the cornucopia of standard and optional features that are traditionally available in these hefty Ford trucks.
In any case, for 2016 the F-350 Super Duty will remain available with 3 cab configurations: the 3-passenger, 2-door Regular Cab, the 6-seat, 4-door Super Cab (with rear-hinged back doors), and the spacious 6-passenger, 4-door Crew Cab. Also returning are the traditional 5 trim levels, including the base XL, the next-up XLT, the quasi-plush Lariat, the western-styled King Ranch, and the top-shelf Platinum. And, of course, returning for 2016 are the 6.8-foot bed and the 8.2-foot long-bed, with the latter the only bed delivered in Regular Cab editions.
Furthermore, the 2016 F-350 Super Duty will again offer all trim levels with available payload-enhancing dual rear wheels (DRW), while rear-wheel drive (RWD) is again standard, and part-time, shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive (4WD) returns as an option throughout the lineup.
Expect no changes to the powerplant offerings for 2016, with the 6.2-liter Flex Fuel V8 being the standard engine in all trim levels. Look for 385 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque from the V8 as it remains under the management of the 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Mileage figures are unavailable for any of these brutes, but this gas-burning V8 can carry up to 6,890 pounds in the bed with DRW configuration, while towing maxes out at 16,100 pounds, using either the standard hitch and wiring or the available fifth-wheel setup.
An uber-capable 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine using the same 6-speed shiftable automatic to put out 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque is also available for 2016. Equipped with the standard hitch, the diesel is capable of towing 19,000 pounds. That number jumps to 26,500 pounds, however, with the fifth-wheel setup. An auxiliary transmission cooler is available as well.
Though a few tweaks to various standard appearance features are expected, look for the 2016 F-350 Super Duty to keep offering such trim-level-dependent adornments as 17-, 18-, or 20-inch steel or alloy wheels, step running boards, heated power-adjustable mirrors, and a power-sliding rear window.
Depending on the trim level selected, look for such interior perks as vinyl, cloth, or leather upholstery to remain standard, along with full power accessories, cruise control (except the XL), telescoping tilt-wheel steering, and either manual air conditioning (XL) or dual-zone automatic climate control (XLT and higher) in next year’s F-350 Super Duty lineup. Additionally, higher trim levels will also return boasting power-adjustable front seats, with the Lariat and higher levels sporting memory for driver settings and power-adjustable pedals. Also remaining standard in higher-level F-350 Super Duty iterations are extras like standard rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and an integrated trailer brake controller.
Techno-wise, and assuming only minor upgrades, look for higher trim levels to tote Bluetooth-interfaced SYNC voice-activation for audio and communications functions, with the Lariat and above versions also throwing in standard MyFord Touch infotainment with an 8-inch display. Additionally, the King Ranch and Platinum throw standard GPS navigation into the mix.
As for entertainment, the F-350 Super Duty ranges from the base XL with its standard AM/FM stereo and 2 speakers, to the Platinum's standard Sony premium system with a CD player, satellite radio, 8 speakers, and auxiliary audio input.
Most upper-echelon variants of the 2016 F-350 Super Duty remain eligible for a bunch of available add-ons, while further optional equipment throughout the lineup includes various axle ratios, a spray-in bedliner, transmission power takeoffs (to operate plow equipment, winches, etc.), and a power sunroof. Also expect Ford’s popular Work Solutions package, with an in-dash computer, to be optional next year, along with the terrain-taming FX4 Off-Road package (4WD trims only), featuring electronic-locking rear differential, descent control, all-terrain tires, Rancho shock absorbers, and skid plates.
Standard safety equipment in the 2016 F-350 Super Duty corral will again include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front (and in Super Cab and Crew Cab versions, rear) head airbags, and a post-collision safety system. Higher trims also return boasting standard front fog/driving lights, SYNC emergency alerts and communications, trailer sway control, and a remote antitheft alarm. Back-up chimes should also return as an optional safety feature for the entire stable.
Drivers of the current F-350 Super Duty in all its manifestations, remain impressed with power, performance, and perks, while this big Ford’s chief rivals will once again include the GMC Sierra 3500 HD, Chevrolet's Silverado 3500 HD, and Ram’s 3500 full-size pickups.
