won't run in drive 2

Asked by Jan 17, 2017 at 11:20 AM about the 1995 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When in drive 2 going up a small slop the trans feels like it is in neutral and slipping, then goes back into gear. All other gears, D, D1, and R work fine.
Hope you can help. Thank you. Tony.

Slipping is not a good sign. Check the fluid level, is it red and at the proper level? Changed recently? How many miles on the transmission? Slipping under load sounds like a torque converter issue. If over 120K, a rebuild might be in your future. Have a local trans shop diagnose your problem and offer solutions.
