1998 saab 900 convertible drivers window will go down but will only go half way up, what is wrong?

I have seen this on other models, not a Saab specifically but when windows won't go up smooth or all the way it is usually a stripped gear in the lift mechanism. That or missing teeth on the gear that causes the jumping or stalling of the window lift.
