1998 Saab turbo seems to "kick" hard into 1st and 2nd  (automatic) gear. next 2 gears can
hardly be felt. Is this a characteristic of Saabs? This is in a normal takeoff from a stoplight
or sign. Trans fluid was about a 1/3 over full I drained it to required level but no difference
in performance.

No this is not normal for this car,may need to have filter and fluid changed,may help.
