02 Boxster IN A noise
I getting a constant flutter noise that sounds like a
loose pulley clanking. It's this an IMS issue?
Could be. I'd be leary about driving it until you have it checked out. If the IMS bearing goes think new engine.
I am prone to agree with Stephen, and recommend you don't drive it further until it is thoroughly checked out - especially if it is a symptom that increases with increasing RPM. If there is no damage done yet, an IMS bearing change/upgrade should be about $2k, which is a lot less than a new engine. Depending on mileage and condition, you may want to treat it to a new clutch, since the transmission will have to come out to do the IMS bearing. In the meantime, you can do some research on the subject at www.pelicanparts.com. Hope this helps you.
If you do the bearing or have it done, the clutch also should be done along with the rear-main seal. If you do it, you'll need a couple of Porsche specialty tools to lock the cam shafts and to hold the engine at top dead center. Have the car towed, don't start it or attempt to drive. Could be a costly error. Good luck.
The IMS bearing is a well known woe by all Porsche fans...986 Nightmare.
I just had the clutch done 3 months ago before this noise started
