You have the VATS security system. Most likely it's the ignition lock cylinder. There's two tiny wires in there that contact the chip on your key. Over time these wires wear and break then they no longer make contact with the chip. You'll need to visit your local GM dealer and find out which VATS key you have. There were 15 possibilities. Once you know what key blank you need you'll use the template key that came with the new lock cylinder to have your VATS key blank cut so it'll work with the new lock cylinder. HTH. -Jim

One thing you can try is to spray alcohol in the ignition lock and air it off with compressed air and make sure your key is really clean to make sure there's no grease or dirt in the lock cylinder or on the key, so they are cleaned out before you go paying a lot of money for repairs try that.
