what is the biggest engine I can fit into a 1996 sunfire se coupe without doing any major modifications?

Yeah, the 2.2L stock engine is about all you can do with this vehicle.

Although in the later sunfires there was an option of a 2.4L engine.

Yeah, but I'd be willing to bet that the 2.4 is probably the same block as the 2.2, with a longer stroke. Just my guess.

DOHC is the difference

could be different and try shoe horning a big block into it...now that would be something to see...
