HELP PLEASE 1997 Firebird 3.8 v6 starting issues

Asked by Krayzie6900 Nov 30, 2011 at 02:46 AM about the 1997 Pontiac Firebird Base

Question type: General

My engine will roll over and occasionally try to crank, but will not. It will also backfire at times. It has a
3.8 v6 in it. There is no distributor, but acts like it is out of time. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

check your ignition coil and spark module, if it is backfiring it means it IS out of timing. definately an electrical/ignition issue

Do you have a voltometer? My 89 Camaro had that same issue. It didnt backfire though because no voltage was getting across to the sparkplugs. There was somthing wrong with the distrubuter and other wiring. But yours doesnt have a distributer, so I would also suggest it is the timing.
