Fuel pump issues?!

Asked by Vandura_2208 Sep 17, 2017 at 04:46 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Firebird Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 1999 firebird with the 3.8 engine,
drove it home it ran fine, next day flushed the
coolant and changed the thermostat because the
coolant was very nasty. It ran good afterwards. I
drove it about 30 miles or so and it died, started it
back up it was running pretty rough, died again it
now cranks and idles but when you push on the gas
it backfires and dies. Gas smells horrible. Changed
the fuel filter, doesn't seem to be getting enough
gas, haven't put a pressure tester on it but it's not
squirting out, it's running out in a little stream. I'm
thinking it needs a fuel pump can anyone tell me
what they think please?

Out of injectors the fuel should be a mist, hard to even see the mist its so tiny and fast. So if its streaming then sounds like dirty injectors, may could be low pressure too. Could try some injection cleaner or a injector rebuild & clean, and test fuel pressure.
