Starting Problem intermittent with 98 Oldsmobile Achieva

Sometimes I have to hold the ignition on for a while before the car will stay started.  Other times it cranks right up- It doesn't seem to matter whether the car has been running a while or not.  It runs great once I get it started.

I've finding that a lot of cars like ours does the same thing. Might be starter, ignition or security. It decided not to work for me today, and I'm stranded looking for a marical answer online.
