1996 explorer crankshaft or flywheel

Asked by Daniel May 16, 2016 at 03:11 AM about the 1996 Ford Explorer 4 Dr XLT SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I was driving to work and my car made a weird
noise  it was running funny and wouldn't accelerate
or shift correctly so I pulled over and shut the
engine off when I tried to start it again it wouldn't
start it made a noise but it didn't make any clicking
noise like you would think I had a mechanic look
but all he did was look under it and said the crank
what broken and that my engine was now a paper
weight I'm hoping that's not the case I'm hoping it's
fixable because I can't afford a new vehicle could it
be the flywheel my cousin has a life if so but I need
advise.

Have him check the flex plate, may have cracked, or broke. Have him pull all the spark plugs and turn it over by hand. Have him check for sure the front and rear piston does not come up to the top of the cylinder.
