if my reverse gear is broken is it necessary to get another transmission

my mechanic checked my truck because it wont reverse and  said i had to get a transmission put in  he said the reverse gear was totally shot

No, but the cost to repair the transmission that's in it would probably exceed the cost of a rebuilt replacement. HTH. -Jim
