I have a 1997 nissan maxima how do i know if the water pump has gone bad or if something else has happened. The ratator was going dry so i would have to put water in it a few times a week.
On my way to work one morning the heater would not give out heat and then steam started to come out from under the hood. I replaced the radator and the thermostat but the car is now over heating. the want to charge 500.00 just to take the water pump out to see if that is the problem now When it was place on the computer it claimes that there is a cucrulation. problem
I would say that the water pump is definitely a possibility. The water pump is what circulates the coolant.
pressure test the cooling system...free at many places...also could be just a hose...
I don't know what engine you have but if the water pump is driven from the timing belt it will be expensive to work on and you should replace the timing belt and any idler wheels while you are at it. Mention this to the mechanic and you will save money in the long run.
